2014 Yasawa Islands Dental/Medical Report

by Linda Kwasny

Our 2014 mission to Navutu Stars was our ninth year there, thanks to the generous support of the owners, Freddie and Madda.  This year, our medical team traveled daily to the outlying islands to run clinics and screen for the ensuing Loloma surgical missions in Taveuni. In all,  835 medical  patients were treated by our stellar team.IMG_2889-L

Back at the resort, our dental contingent worked with four separate operatories, extracting, filling, restoring and sealing teeth.  We were very fortunate to have Jim Kelly from UCLA who brought a much appreciated new dynamic of dentures for a number of patients.  In all, the teams performed a total of over 1000 procedures.

The seamless success of the trip could not have happened without a year of coordinating logistics with Reapi who orchIMG_2756-Lestrated moving the people, Vinnu, who moved the 6 pallets of equipment and supplies and Dan who was on the ground each day with the volunteers.  Jeff, the fabulous new manager of the resort made sure there were so many special Navutu experiences that will be remembered by all.  Sai and Varani, the efficient office staff, thanks for all your energy in keeping things organized.  Ben and the kitchen and wait staff outdid themselves this year.  Riaz kept us electrified and humming.

It’s a special journey with so many players who make it all happen the way it does.  Thanks to all of you for enabling yet another successful mission. We hope to be fortunate enough to return again in 2015.
